Network Video Recorders - NVR

A network video recorder, or commonly referred to as NVR, is a device which records video captured by network cameras (IP cameras). In recent years, network video recorders have taken over the market from digital video recorders (DVRs), which work together with analog cameras. Nearly every security manufacturer offers network video recorders in their product line. Most network video recorders can manage higher resolution cameras and better pictures than digital video recorders. Additionally, network cameras do not have to be directly connected to a network video recorder. For the network video recorder to store the footage of a network camera the two devices simply have to be on the same network.

A network video recorder (NVR) is usually connected to the internet which allows easy remote access with a computer or phone. Many network video recorders (NVRs) also offer Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, which powers the network cameras over one ethernet cable. This makes the installation much easier as only one Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable needs to be installed instead of one cable for video transmission and one cable for power. Network video recorders generally have one or more bays to install a hard drive for local storage.
