Wireless Network IP Camera Overview

A wireless IP network camera includes wireless communication capabilities as opposed to requiring that a network connection be present via a wired Category 5 network cable. Older wireless IP network camera technology included support for 802.11b wireless networks. However, wireless IP network cameras available today usually tend to support 802.11g wireless communication. 802.11n wireless communication support will be available in the future.

Most wireless IP network cameras also include a wired Cat 5 network port for configuration purposes before allowing the camera to join a secure wireless network. A wireless IP network camera may also allow for accessory high gain antennas to be used for expanded wireless range. As with any wireless device, wireless communication can be hindered by distance limitations and outside wireless interference or noise. However, since wireless IP network cameras adhere to the same wireless standards of other 802.11g wireless devices, determining if a wireless camera will function within a wireless network can be established with more traditional wireless devices or wireless signal testing equipment.
