Video Server

A video server, also known as a video encoder, allows for an analog CCTV camera to be used within an IP network video surveillance installation. Essentially, an analog camera will attach its coaxial video feed to a video server typically via a BNC analog connection. The video server will then convert the analog video data into digital form where it can then be accessed within an IP network video surveillance configuration. This allows for upgrading from older analog surveillance to digital IP surveillance without having to replace the analog cameras with IP network cameras. Video server devices are often referred to by the number of Ports or Channels present. For example, a 4-Port (4 Channel) video server would allow for up to four analog video feeds to be attached.

A video server can feature many of the same capabilities also found in an IP network camera. This includes sending snapshots, digital input and output (Digital I/O) configuration, remote accessibility and management as well as mobile surveillance support. Video servers can not only connect to traditional analog CCTV cameras but can also be used to connect non traditional devices to an IP network. These devices may include almost any device that can produce a video stream over an analog video line.

Utilizing a video server within a surveillance installation can help to reduce the cost of upgrading to an IP network video surveillance system by allowing for older analog technology to still be used in addition to any newly added IP camera or IP software technologies.
