Power over Ethernet (PoE)
PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. PoE compliant devices such as compatible IP cameras or video encoders have the ability to safely receive the necessary power required via the same Category 5 cable that data transmission occurs on. PoE compliant devices follow the IEEE 802.3af standard. A PoE capable IP camera or video encoder can be used with a PoE compliant switch or Power Injector. Also, most non PoE IP cameras or video encoders can be adapted to accept PoE via a PoE Injector or PoE Kit which will typically include a PoE Injector and Splitter. PoE switches, injectors, splitters or kits are usually sold as on accessory item.
PoE capable devices may also be found to be non-compliant. A non-compliant PoE device does not have the ability to sense if the device connected to it is also PoE capable. For example, a non-compliant PoE power injector or switch would not be able to tell if an IP camera connected is indeed capable of receiving power via PoE. This can lead to a non PoE IP camera being damaged. This differs from a compliant PoE power injector or switch that would indeed be able to tell if the device connected is able to receive power via PoE. Non-compliant PoE devices should only be used in conjunction with PoE capable devices. Please use discretion when operating a non-compliant PoE device to ensure that only devices capable of receive power via PoE are connected.
