Network Video Recorder Overview

A network video recorder (NVR) is an internet protocol (IP) based device designed for monitoring and recording of IP cameras and video servers or video encoders. Network video recorder devices are typically stand-alone devices that connect to a network via Ethernet connection and allow for local or remote access and administration. Network video recorders may be available in different variations that are dependent on the number of cameras to be connected and the amount of storage needed for video recorded data. Most network video recorders also allow for data redundancy via RAID configurations.

Network video recording software is sometimes also referred to as NVR software and can usually be found on an NVR device. However, it is possible to obtain NVR software for installation on a computer as opposed to a stand-alone network video recorder. This section will primarily feature NVR stand-alone devices.
