Wireless IP Camera Range

Wireless IP Camera Range

Postby SCStores on Sat May 31, 2008 10:11 am

Will wireless point range matter with a standard wireless ip camera? We need to install 16 cameras in a large warehouse. We plan to install the wireless access point in the center of the warehouse but the cameras will still be a long distance from the cameras - some being on the outside of the building. The outdoor wireless ip cameras will be going through metal walls.

Will most standard wireless ip cameras work fine for this type of installation or will we require to buy a special type of wireless ip camera that has a larger wifi range?

Camera suggestions are welcome.

A standard IP camera should work fine but you might need to get a better wireless router than the standard routers at the local electronic store.

What is the distance between the router and wireless IP cameras? Also, how many walls will be between the wireless IP cameras and router?

What are you looking to do with your IP camera? Will you be recording motion? FTPing or emailing snapshots?

You might consider using additional wireless access points as signal repeaters in more of a "mesh" topography, with a single entity controlling DHCP. Cisco Aironet wireless gear is not cheap but worth the price in my field experience. DLink also offers some nice wireless switches and AP's with technology they got when they acquired Trapeze Networks a few years back.

I have deployed VoIP on wireless networks many times and most of the same networking best practices apply to video.
