The network video surveillance industry has always included support for Windows based computer systems and has tended to avoid supporting the Mac (Macintosh) platform. With the popularity and wide availability of computer systems running Windows based operating systems, it was only natural to support Windows based platforms during the initial years of the IP network video surveillance industry’s existence. This also includes IP camera setup software and network video management software which have primarily always been designed to operate on computer systems running Windows based operating systems.
In the past, network camera devices have relied heavily on MPEG4 video compression and ActiveX controls for allowing a network camera’s video feed to display through the Internet Explorer web browser. However, with the evolution of network video surveillance and the increase in popularity of the Mac platform, Mac support has now started to become available and the need to rely on ActiveX controls is no longer an issue preventing proper Mac support due to most network cameras now including alternative solutions to ActiveX controls.
The Mac IP Network Camera section on the Network Camera Store website will display IP camera devices that support the Mac (Macintosh) platform. This includes IP camera devices that include Mac compatible setup software and video surveillance software and will also include IP camera devices that can be viewed on a Mac computer system on a basic level, including live viewing of video images and basic camera configuration. It is also possible for some Mac compatible IP camera devices to allow for video recording through Apple QuickTime Pro. Mac compatible IP cameras may also be supported by Mac compatible network video surveillance software applications from third party software developers.
With the introduction of Mac support for IP network cameras, comes a welcomed alternative to the heavily favoured Windows based network video surveillance market. With Mac network video surveillance product support available, the network video surveillance industry is sure to grow even bigger now that two separate platforms, Windows and Mac, are being developed for. Be sure to check out the newly created Mac IP Network Camera category for details on Mac supported IP camera devices. More Mac IP cameras will be added soon!
