Optimize Operations of Surveillance System Components with Milestone XProtect Central 3.7

Monday, April 19th, 2010

COPENHAGEN – 19 April 2010. Milestone Systems, the open platform company for IP video management software, has released XProtect™ Central version 3.7. XProtect Central is an operational status monitoring and alarm management solution for Milestone XProtect Corporate, XProtect Enterprise & XProtect Professional servers, video surveillance cameras and external devices. This solution ensures that operators maintain a complete overview of alarms and technical problems, allowing immediate visual verification and troubleshooting to resolve incidents fast.

Ideal for implementations with multiple sites or buildings, XProtect Central helps large security installations minimize risks and optimize operations. The visual and audio alerts can improve busy environments like alarm and dispatch centrals, where the instant access to servers and cameras translates to quick response for all locations. Using clickable graphical overviews and customizable alarms with visual verification on the status of all connections and hardware, response control is at its best.

Visually verify alarms, respond fast, audit trails
Installations with different servers, cameras and hardware must run properly to ensure top security if a device fails to record or display video, the outcome can be devastating. Milestone XProtect Central is a powerful tool for managing such operational demands to ensure maximum up-time, total overview, and fast reactions. It continuously monitors the operational status and event-triggered alarms of XProtect servers, video cameras, and integrated devices such as access control units. Security operators get instant graphical overviews of alarms and technical alerts with immediate visual verification to resolve issues.

  • An alarm list displays a filtered overview of all problems for clicking directly to an incident and a beep feature can help ensure attention.
  • Users can define alarm priorities, pre-define time profiles, acknowledge or reassign alarms, enable and disable alarms with controlled user commands or by hardware input signals: for example, enable a motion detected alarm when the last person leaves a building.
  • Alarms triggered by an input signal have a preview image from the camera, and can be used for cameras watching each other: if one fails, the other lets you know what happened.
  • Spread the workload: provide backup capacity by assigning alarm management to multiple simultaneous operators with individual rights.
  • Create audit trails of events.

Easy graphical map overviews
Multi-level maps make easy navigation and identification of incident locations and the system elements involved. Alarms are shown at the highest level map, like a city site, and operators can click down to sub-level maps of buildings, rooms, gates, etc. for more details or actions.

New in XProtect Central 3.7

  • Define default image quality and frame rates by alarm type, which can also be altered manually by operators when playing back an alarm or viewing a live stream. This capability reduces the system bandwidth usage and allows remote users connected via low bandwidth connections to access video sequences associated with the alarms in XProtect Central – particularly relevant when monitoring a number of distributed systems where the connections between systems are low or not guaranteed.
  • Auxiliary commands enable control of such things as wipers on cameras connected via video servers. Such camera-associated devices that are connected via auxiliary connection can be controlled from the central client.
  • Additional support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is now provided.

Integration with third-party systems
XProtect Central has plug-in support for third-party systems like access control or other devices. Operators can both monitor and control these from the XProtect Central interface (close or open gates, doors, turn off smoke detectors, etc.), in addition to monitoring and verifying their status and alarms.

“Milestone continuously enhances our software to increase performance for our customers. This ensures the best return on their security system investment, the ability to easily include new innovations as they become available, and most importantly constantly improves security,” says Christian Bohn, Head of Product Management at Milestone Systems. “Using XProtect Central, operators can concentrate their time on actual events and not just stare ineffectively at a monitor wall. It’s more than just alarm and operations management – it’s trouble-shooting that minimizes risk significantly.”

Milestone will be exhibiting the full line of XProtect IP video management software at the following security trade shows this spring: the MIPS Expo in Moscow April 19-22 (Hall 1, D19), Security Canada in Quebec April 20-21, and IFSEC in Birmingham UK May 10-13 (Hall 4, F90).

City of Ursus lowers crime with Milestone video surveillance

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

This Polish suburb now has one of the lowest crime rates per 100,000 residents of all the Warsaw districts.

The city of Ursus just outside Warsaw, Poland, has lowered crime with the help of surveillance from Milestone Systems, the open platform company in IP video management software. XProtect™ Enterprise software manages 300 network cameras from Axis Communications to protect schools, nurseries, parks and government buildings.

Ursus is a district of Warsaw located just west of the city. This suburb has a population of almost 50,000 with an average population density that is much higher than that of Warsaw with almost 6,000 residents per square kilometer. Vandalism used to plague the educational institutions such as schools and nurseries, as well as the parks in this busy suburb. Ursus authorities decided to introduce a video monitoring system to provide public security and the ability to react faster to such incidents.

The local authorities in Ursus wanted to invest in an upgradeable video surveillance solution that can be easily modernized and expanded, and it had to integrate with previously installed hardware. One priority was to monitor 8 schools and 7 nurseries, where it is planned to provide public access to the cameras installed in those locations via local cable TV. The second priority was the installation of cameras in the parks. Video monitoring has also extended to the local authority building and its perimeter.

Various solutions, both analog and digital, were trialled before a decision was made; both set-up costs and open-ended system structure were determined for the design. Based on experts’ opinions, TCP/IP-based monitoring was the final winner. Approximately 300 Axis cameras are now controlled by Milestone XProtect Enterprise IP video management software, and the video data is recorded and stored on local servers. The system runs on a fiber network, as well as copper-based and external wireless transmission.

“Application of TCP/IP network infrastructure has opened new venues for the computer networks already in place. In many cases, a minor upgrade to a network replaced the need for serious expenditure to create new infrastructure. System modularity and scalability combined with technological progress ensured by Milestone was the factor that swayed us in favor of this video monitoring solution with data storage and online/offline viewing,” said Stefan Żaja, the Head of the Organizational Division for the Ursus district of Warsaw. “It is easy to re-set the configuration parameters of the system by adding new hardware devices and moving the cameras as current needs arise.”

After the system was installed, the number of cases of criminal damages and theft was reduced, and access to the recordings provides the evidence for fast resolution of incidents.

Prevention and prosecution
The total number of IP cameras installed across Ursus is approximately 300. The majority of these are fixed, uni-directional cameras, but where necessary rotational ones were also installed with Pan/Tilt/Zoom. Some megapixel cameras have been installed, as well; they were chosen for their very high image quality, required for personal identification and licence plate recognition.

The surveillance cameras, apart from the monitoring functions, have proven to give a preventive effect – the knowledge that one is being watched and recorded is often a deterrent. The net effect is a reduction in crime and offence rates. When incidents do happen, high-quality recording is used as evidence in court. Ursus today is proud to have one of the lowest crime rates per 100,000 residents of all Warsaw districts. This figure stands for both minor offences and serious crimes.

Expandable flexibility
Based on a central Milestone application implemented in Ursus (the system owner is the Warsaw City Hall), local surveillance “islands” were built. They cover the nurseries, schools, other community facilities and public buildings. They are then linked to the municipal monitoring system, managed from the central location and shared with other users, such as the municipal police. It is planned to link the Ursus survellance system to the Warsaw-wide municipal monitoring system.

“Milestone software is perfectly suited for such integration, as it is compatible with cameras by various vendors, including the analog ones that have already been installed in the Warsaw area,” says Waldemar Szylar, the Board Director of Mirare, the company responsible for the implementation of Milestone XProtect. “Through its open platform design, Milestone is very flexible. It is possible to enhance the video monitoring system by adding analytics software with new features, such as people counting, detection of abandoned luggage, or automatic identification of road traffic offences like parking or moving violations.”

Loomis documents cash handling with Milestone IP video

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

COPENHAGEN – 23 March 2010. Milestone Systems open platform IP video management software is an important tool for Loomis Danmark to ensure transparency throughout the entire cash services process. The transport and counting of cash, financial documents and other valuables is a business that demands ongoing attention to security, which is well covered by Milestone XProtect™ Corporate managing network cameras from Axis and megapixel cameras from IQinVision documenting every detail of the activities.

“For us security has the highest priority, for obvious reasons. Our customers’ livelihoods are literally in our hands when we carry out our work, so it is therefore vital that there is a strong relationship of trust. And this relates not only to our customers but also just as importantly to our employees, who handle all the assets on a daily basis,” explains Risk Manager Tom Andersen at Loomis.

Loomis utilizes a number of security measures, where video surveillance plays a big role. Every day over 100 cameras in the Glostrup location and a similar number in the city of Brabrand help to ensure that all procedures and security processes are being upheld. Thereby Loomis makes sure that every instance of cash handling is documented so any eventual irregularity can quickly be resolved.

The surveillance technology is based on Milestone Systems open platform IP video management software, XProtect Corporate, with network cameras from Axis and IQinVision. With just a few clicks, operators can control different cameras at the same time and view the live or archived video from any location. Loomis monitors all the entrances and exits, cash handling areas, receiving and deliveries, in addition to the outer perimeters of their premises.

The 1st of April 2008 is a day that Loomis will never forget. That night at 3:32 a.m. the police received a robbery alarm from Loomis: a group of men had busted into the cash handling company’s building by breaking a hole through the wall with a telescope laser, and managed to get away with DK 62 million. The biggest robbery in the history of Denmark thereby became a reality, despite all of the security measures they had in place at that time. Loomis immediately went to work reviewing all their procedures and systems to improve their security even more.

“Of course the robbery sharpened our focus on security! Our business always has to live with the risk of robberies but we can make it more and more difficult for any attempts by dividing our security elements and defenses into different levels that hinder and delay any criminal efforts so much that the police can manage to arrive and deal with it. One of our important components is the video surveillance, which is also a fantastic tool for the police to use as evidence in their work,” says Tom Andersen, who emphasizes that Loomis makes ongoing changes to their security procedures all the time.

When the robbery occurred, Loomis had operations at night for cash counting so there were employees present at the time of the incident. Today, Loomis only operates during the day, and another part of the increased defense of the building includes new alarms installed to warn when anyone is even getting near the building from the outside.

Loomis previously had an analog system that became outdated, so after a thorough review of their security needs in collaboration with SmartGuard, a Certified Milestone Partner, it became clear that the open platform IP video solution from Milestone Systems provided all of the right options.

Transparency and documentation for top integrity
When en employee is hired, he or she must go through a series of security procedures such as credit and police arrest record checks. Yet even though Loomis takes all these precautions, it is still necessary to have an extra guaranty of accountability, which the video surveillance ensures. Today there are many cameras in the work stations. The zoom functions in the software combined with the megapixel cameras from IQinVision deliver the sharpest images of money bags being opened, and the money counting is monitored from different angles. The video information can be compared with the customers’ records so any eventual differences can be revealed and resolved. This saves time and provides thorough documentation and integrity for the asset management process.

“With the video surveillance we can document that we do our work properly and this strengthens our objective role with our customers. The video also helps us ensure things for our employees: should anything questionable come up, we can immediately go back in the recorded video and see that the task was handled correctly,” says Andersen.

“The reason that we chose Milestone was precisely because the solution includes an intelligent SmartSearch function that lets us click quickly to the exact date and time for the scanning of a particular money bag and view it. We can also look for an object that’s disappeared simply by marking it in the images,” he adds, and concludes: “The video monitoring makes it possible for us to live up to our promise of transparency and documentation for our customers. And the Milestone open IP platform also allows us to integrate the system with other innovative solutions over time. This creates a high level of flexibility, and is just one of the ways in which we have future-proofed our business.”

Milestone IP video software secures Malmo CityTunnel

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

When the Swedish national railway began major construction of the Malmo CityTunnel Project in 2005, workplace security was of utmost concern. Now the tracks are almost ready, and it is IP video surveillance management software from Milestone Systems that helps make sure everything goes smoothly.

COPENHAGEN, March 4th, 2010. When construction is complete in December 2010, 17 kilometers of new high-tech, double-track electric rails will connect Malmo Central Station in Sweden with the Oresund Bridge to Denmark. Six kilometers of that will run underground in two parallel tunnels through the center of Malmo. The goal of the CityTunnel connection between Malmo and Copenhagen is to greatly reduce the travel time between the two cities – and not least to transform Malmo Central Station into a transit hub that powers the pan-Scandinavian network.

Several thousand people have been involved in this construction, and today around 100 men are working with the last preparations. It is precisely this reduction in personnel that has made the managers of the CityTunnel project sharpen security for the workers with IP video surveillance from Milestone Systems.

“In conjunction with reducing the workforce in this phase, we have increased the security because even though the project will soon be finished, we have to continue to ensure that the work goes smoothly and problem-free and that our employees have safe work conditions. We have therefore chosen IP network video surveillance, and it has already solved a number of issues for us,” says Mikael Lundquist, Manager for Personnel & Work Environment, CityTunnel.

In collaboration with Insupport, a Certified Milestone Partner, the CityTunnel project identified weak points in their security and it was clear that network video surveillance was necessary. The choice was Milestone XProtect™ Enterprise, an IP software solution designed as an open platform that supports the largest options for cameras and integrations with other systems – both existing and future. The video surveillance is installed in three train stations, as well as the tunnels, with about 30 Sony IP cameras, including the rugged stationary dome model SNC DF80 and the panorama model SNC RZ25 with Pan/Tilt/Zoom and day/night functionality.

Strong Nordic Partner
“The decision to use Milestone was easy. We know Milestone really well, and they offer a very strong platform that allows integration with all kinds of software and hardware. Among other things, we can archive the surveillance video in very high quality and quickly export images to other locations, which has huge value for the CityTunnel,” states Pontus Pettersson, VP at Insupport Natverksvideo.

Three security guards patrol the underground stations where the surveillance is installed. When they walk their normal rounds they can also have their colleagues follow with the video monitors at any time. The system has been used primarily for documentation which has already been a big help, for example in the case of two inebriated Danes who got lost in the tunnel in January. With the video images, there was incontrovertible evidence that was immediately given to the police.

“We have been very pleased with the Milestone software, not least because it is easy to use by our security personnel, but of course because it makes our work much safer,” concludes Mikael Lundquist.

About the Malmo CityTunnel:
The CityTunnel is one of the Swedish National Rail Administration’s projects, funded by the National Rail Administration (Banverket), the City of Malmo, Region Skaane and the EU. The project will have major impact on strengthening the entire region, with its goal to create a fast and efficient connection between Malmo Central Station and the Oresund Bridge.
